Track of the Week #17: Anoushka Shankar - 'Boat To Nowhere'

Tue Sep 18th

Every week, we bring you a must-hear track from the Le Guess Who? 2018 line-up. This week, we dwell on the emotional instrumental track 'Boat to Nowhere' by renowned sitar player Anoushka Shankar.

'Boat to Nowhere' is the opening track of Shankar's 2016 album 'Land of Gold', with which Shankar fiercely criticizes the refugee crisis. On the album, she makes an appeal to everyone to meet his or her humanitarian duty. 'Land of Gold' was nominated for a Grammy, which marked Shankar's sixth Grammy nomination.

Anoushka Shankar co-wrote 'Boat to Nowhere' with Austrian Hang-player and Björk collaborator Manu Delago, who will perform at Le Guess Who? 2018 together with Shankar. The song is strongly characterized by Shankar's distinctive sitar playing, influenced by Indian sounds as well as contemporary music. Another inspiration came from the moody soundscapes of producer Matt Robertson.

"Many of us have struggled with it in the last couple of years and we can get overwhelmed. A lot of it comes from the state of the world and the tireless influx of images and scary stories, and certain politicians coming to power. There’s a hopelessness that can make us give up, but the challenge is to learn to stay engaged in a way that also sustains us." - Anoushka Shankar
